Finding a Location for Marijuana Dispensaries
The number of states that authorized marijuana for medical purposes is continuously increasing, with Maryland and Minnesota being recently added to the list. Business owners in these states who see potential in setting up a medical marijuana dispensary can start looking for locations now. Unfortunately, these dispensaries don’t work the same way as normal brick-and-mortar shops. There are several things to consider:
Avoid proximity to day care centers, schools, libraries, recreational facilities, parks, or any other area that attract underage individuals. Each state has its own minimum distance limits. In California and Illinois, for instance, medical marijuana dispensaries should at least be 1,000 feet away from schools, libraries, and the like.
Avoid proximity to other medical dispensaries in operation. In a traditional business structure, setting up shop near a direct competitor is considered a tactical move. This is not the same when it comes to establishing medical marijuana dispensaries. It’s not recommended to open a dispensary that’s close to an existing one.
Provide easy access for all patients. The dispensary should be accessible by private vehicle but close to public transit options like bus or trains. The place itself should also be handicap-friendly to make it convenient for people with disabilities to have access to medical marijuana supply.
